Respect Tip: Kindness Works

Kindness is one of my favorite topics. Last fall, I wrote a respect tip on being kind to everyone, but the topic is so important that sometimes it needs repeating.

And even more so, it requires an example of kindness at work. That’s why I was thrilled this Sunday to read a piece written by Colin Powell illustrating this very topic. In Kindness Works, Powell says:

Kindness is not just about being nice; it’s about recognizing another human being who deserves care and respect.

He then goes on to tell a story about how a simple act of kindness in an office parking garage determined how soon you would be exiting that parking garage at the end of the day. With this simple story, Powell proves kindness works.

Sometimes all it takes is one positive interaction with someone to set the tone for the rest of your relationship. Powell later discusses how he used this story to inspire other senior leaders he worked with emphasizing how a even a single kind word could build a respectful relationship.

Think about what legacy you want to leave. Is kindness part of the plan?

An excellent article by Colin Powell, a reminder that you receive the kindness that you put out towards others.
